Contact Search+
Extend default contact search to notes, organizations and postal addresses.
A friend was talking about his favorite specialty meat shop. We asked him for a phone number. He pulls out his iPhone, hesitates and says:
- I don't remember the name of the shop.
- No problem, why don't you just type meat in the search?
- Well, this thing only searches through names.
- Hah! Just wait for Android. It'll find everything!
As it turned out, Android as well searches contacts only by name!
Not anymore! We extend this search to notes, organizations and postal addresses so you can now find your auto service or massage therapist without remembering the name. You don't use your Contacts search, instead it integrates with the Search Widget (or Google Search Widget) right on your home screen. Just simply use the Search Widget (or Google Search Widget) to search for all your contacts now!
Before the application can be used, the Search Widget (or Google Search Widget) needs to be made aware of it. From home screen click Menu button and select Settings followed by Search followed by Searchable Items. Once there, make sure that Contact Search+ is checked.
Now you can add some notes to your contacts.
When you search for word in your contact's note for the first time, the contact will not show on the top of search suggestions. You have to scroll all the way down to More results... where you will see results supplied by Contact Search+. Tap on it.
It will expand. Tap on the expanded area and you will see your contacts.
When you have selected the results from More results... several times (about five times) the phone will realize that these are legitimate results and will promote the suggestions to the top of the list. Simply tap on the contact to show the details.
Run Contact Search+ to set which fields of the contact data and how will they be searched.
Contact Search+ requires access to your phone's contacts to perform the search. We do not share, nor collect any information in your contacts. The access is purely used for searches you perform on your phone.
I was ready to return my mytouch phone because of the fustration of searching contacts. Unless it's in the name field you are screwed to find something like a company name where you didn't put an actual contact in the name field. I just downloaded this app, and it's a miracle, I can now find the contacts that I couldn't "find" before that I knew were there. Thank you - genius!!!
I loaded the app and ran through all the settings on the web page for setting up this app. I am still unable to find a contact by searching for a word in my notes field. I am running on a Motorola Droid 2.0.1. Please help.
Oops! You are right. There is a problem when running on a Motorola Droid 2.0.1.
I'm gonna start working on a fix right away and upload update as soon as I'm done.
Keep the app installed. You will be notified about the update.
Just uploaded the new version that works on Android 2.
How do I get the update for Android 2 that actually searches the notes??
Run Android Market application on your phone. Click "Downloads" and the "Update available" should show there.
You should be running version 1.0.2.
Others are using this on Android 2 without any problem.
Does it search in "nickname" too?
Thanks (Milestone 2.0.1)
Presently not.
We have added it to the list of the things to do.
Thanks.
im trying to install app on my BackFlip. i found it online at appbrain, installed it on my phone, synced the two. but when i click install on the phone it gets directed to the following:
there are no matches in Android Market for the search: pname: com.gnugu.contactsearchplus
I cant install it please help me make this happen. Thank you
Also tried scanning QR code same thing same message.
Contact Search+ requires Android 1.6 and up.
Check what version of Android you have.
Also make sure that paid applications are available in your country.
This feature doesn't look like it will be available in Froyo either, so this app just became the first one I bought. The only thing I'd change would be the promotion to top list after fewer selections, but can't have it all. :)
Sweet app!
This is not possible. This decided by OS. Four or five selections will do it :).
Thanks.
Thank you. Thank you! Best $3.00 I ever spent. I tried searching by company name on my new EVO Phone from Sprint and it only defaults to name search! For new users, YOU MUST go to homepage settings and allow this application to work under "search." Otherwise your main default search button won't allow the application to run.
In any case, it works well with the EVO. Don't even waste your time on those free apps. I was also able to search by job title and notes!
Thanks! It's always good to hear from happy user.
Glad it works on EVO.
Soon you will be able to search through Nicknames as well!
Fantastic! Works like a charm!
I almost conceded to the fact I would not be able to search by company until I found this app! 600+ contacts are now useful again!
Excellent app - solves the "search by Company" problem for business users. The extra search functionality like search by postcode, in notes, etc is the icing on the cake!
Thank you!
Works fine on Desire (Eclair).
Brilliant work by the developer but why haven't Google dealt with this?
Just purchased the app but can't get it to work on my EVO... I've made sure it is checked under searchable items on my home page settings but it is still not working. I am using Android Version 2.2. I've tried searching for company names that I know I have multiple contacts for but it only pulls up one contact for each. I've tried searching "Env" and "Environmental" which should pull up hundreds of my contacts as most of the company names have either the abbreviaion or full word but no luck, it only pulls up two contacts. Any suggestions?
Android 2.2 changes things a bit.
In your Quick Search Box click on the icon on the left of it and from the drop down select Contact Search+. You will be able to search all your Env contacts from there.
Better yet, long click on desktop and select Add Widgets and add Search Box widget. It will then ask you what type of search box to add. Select Contact Search+. You will have dedicated Contact Search+ search box.
See http://www.gnugu.com/node/92.
recently got the Evo, and just downloaded your app (former blackberry user). On the surface, it does exactly what I need. However, when I searched on a company that should've returned about 100+ results, I noticed it only gives me 50 results, then no option to show the rest.
is there any way to see the full list? In this case, I was cut off with people whose names began with J - couldn't see the rest after that
is there a setting or something I need to change?
thanks. Solve this problem and you have a friend for life :-)

Hi, very nice app!
Does it support search within labels of phone numbers?
In my company we use the labels to identify different people inside the same organization witch is a single contact, e.g.
Company A
* Office phone: +11111111
* Phone (custom label='Thomas Anderson'): +222222
* Phone (custom label='James Bond'): +3333333
We need to find contact "Company A" even typing 'anderson' or 'james'.
It it possible? Thanks :)
Sorry, this is not supported.
Hi, just bought the app and have a couple of issues in Android 1.6. I wanted to be able to search the nicknames, this just doesn't work - notes, organisations and addresses works fine though.
All the results are shown as java.lang.UnsupportedOperationExcepti... (cuts off at that point) Clicking on a result shows a valid contact record

This is a support issue. Please email our support with as much detail as possible.
I loved the way my Blackberry searched. You could type any number of letters of the first name, then a space, then any number of letters of the last name. Same with Company Name.
To find John Smith at ABC Company you could type any of the following:
jo sm
sm jo
jo ab
jo sm ab
This really narrows down the results. This would be an awesome option for Contact Search+.
The way it is now, you have to type the complete first name before you can begin the last name.
Do you have trial ? I hate to call my credit card company to cancel my purchase if I find the actual software doesn't match my expectation

You purchase on Android Market. After that you have 48 hours to test and return for 100% refund if you are not satisfied.
Thanks! It's always good to hear from happy user.
real soft
why can't i search with my droid 2?
Please email our support. You definitely can!
Can Contact Search+ also look at calendar entries for a match?
The Android Market has a 15 minute refund policy. If I buy, my intent is to keep the program. But, by the time I download, install and get the program to promote itself to the the top of the Search window- the 15 minutes can already be long gone without really seeing if it worked properly. Any demo available to allow 1-hour of use prior to buying?
Thanks for your help!
Sorry, CS+ does not search calendar.
We do not have a trial version.
I haven't got contact search+ yet, but after reading the posts it is great. The widget looks fantastic. There's a chance I'll get it. (first get my android-phone)
Two questions :
1° When will it be able to search ALL the contact fields
2° when will it be able to search in calendar
(My Windows Mobile does a great job on this)
RE: Calendar. CS+ doesn't search calendar. It will not. If we develop calendar search, it will be separate application.
RE: All Fields. Which fields do you have in mind?
I mean all fields in the first page of OUTLOOK
Sorry, don't know what first page of OUTLOOK is :(
when do a contact search for an organization email address underneath the name shows the active directory path for the user and it wont allow me to email that user... When i uninstall the app i can email the user?
It is a great app and very happy with the performance of the app thanks a lot to the developers.

Khaled, tap on the empty space on your phone's screen. From the menu select Widgets and from there Google Search. Then it will ask you to which application you want to dedicate the widget. Select Contact Search+. Use THAT to find the contacts. DO NOT use your contacts application! Contact Search+ does not integrate with that.
For more help please email us directly.
I tested it. Found a contact with the text "Middle School Camp" in it. It did NOT find it when I searched by "middle", "Middle", "camp" or "Camp". Also, can we use a wild card so "charg" will find "charger", "charging", "charges", etc.?
Craig,
it all works, including what you call the wild cards.
Please read the instructions carefully. Also visit FAQ section on this site.
This is so what I've been looking for! Just bought it....now the problem: when I go to 'settings' it does not have a 'search' line. Where is it?
Starting Android 2.1 they have moved it.
You have to place a Google Search widget on your phone's desktop.
Then tap on it so it takes the whole screen. Now pres menu button and find settings there.
Did you try re-installing?
What happened those few weeks ago? Did you upgrade your Android? Did you install something new?
