Contact Search+
Extend default contact search to notes, organizations and postal addresses.
A friend was talking about his favorite specialty meat shop. We asked him for a phone number. He pulls out his iPhone, hesitates and says:
- I don't remember the name of the shop.
- No problem, why don't you just type meat in the search?
- Well, this thing only searches through names.
- Hah! Just wait for Android. It'll find everything!
As it turned out, Android as well searches contacts only by name!
Not anymore! We extend this search to notes, organizations and postal addresses so you can now find your auto service or massage therapist without remembering the name. You don't use your Contacts search, instead it integrates with the Quick Search Box widget right on your home screen. Just simply use the Quick Search Box widget to search for all your contacts now!
Before the application can be used, the Quick Search Box needs to be made aware of it. From home screen click Menu button and select Settings followed by Search followed by Searchable Items. Once there, make sure that Contact Search+ is checked.
Now you can add some notes to your contacts.
When you search for word in your contact's note for the first time, the contact will not show on the top of search suggestions. You have to scroll all the way down to More results... where you will see results supplied by Contact Search+. Tap on it.
It will expand. Tap on the expanded area and you will see your contacts.
When you have selected the results from More results... several times (about five times) the phone will realize that these are legitimate results and will promote the suggestions to the top of the list. Simply tap on the contact to show the details.
Run Contact Search+ to set which fields of the contact data and how will they be searched.

I was ready to return my mytouch phone because of the fustration of searching contacts. Unless it's in the name field you are screwed to find something like a company name where you didn't put an actual contact in the name field. I just downloaded this app, and it's a miracle, I can now find the contacts that I couldn't "find" before that I knew were there. Thank you - genius!!!
I loaded the app and ran through all the settings on the web page for setting up this app. I am still unable to find a contact by searching for a word in my notes field. I am running on a Motorola Droid 2.0.1. Please help.
Oops! You are right. There is a problem when running on a Motorola Droid 2.0.1.
I'm gonna start working on a fix right away and upload update as soon as I'm done.
Keep the app installed. You will be notified about the update.
Just uploaded the new version that works on Android 2.
How do I get the update for Android 2 that actually searches the notes??
Run Android Market application on your phone. Click "Downloads" and the "Update available" should show there.
You should be running version 1.0.2.
Others are using this on Android 2 without any problem.
Does it search in "nickname" too?
Thanks (Milestone 2.0.1)
Presently not.
We have added it to the list of the things to do.
Thanks.
im trying to install app on my BackFlip. i found it online at appbrain, installed it on my phone, synced the two. but when i click install on the phone it gets directed to the following:
there are no matches in Android Market for the search: pname: com.gnugu.contactsearchplus
I cant install it please help me make this happen. Thank you
Also tried scanning QR code same thing same message.
Contact Search+ requires Android 1.6 and up.
Check what version of Android you have.
Also make sure that paid applications are available in your country.
This feature doesn't look like it will be available in Froyo either, so this app just became the first one I bought. The only thing I'd change would be the promotion to top list after fewer selections, but can't have it all. :)
Sweet app!
This is not possible. This decided by OS. Four or five selections will do it :).
Thanks.
Thank you. Thank you! Best $3.00 I ever spent. I tried searching by company name on my new EVO Phone from Sprint and it only defaults to name search! For new users, YOU MUST go to homepage settings and allow this application to work under "search." Otherwise your main default search button won't allow the application to run.
In any case, it works well with the EVO. Don't even waste your time on those free apps. I was also able to search by job title and notes!
Thanks! It's always good to hear from happy user.
Glad it works on EVO.
Soon you will be able to search through Nicknames as well!
Fantastic! Works like a charm!
I almost conceded to the fact I would not be able to search by company until I found this app! 600+ contacts are now useful again!
Excellent app - solves the "search by Company" problem for business users. The extra search functionality like search by postcode, in notes, etc is the icing on the cake!
Thank you!
Works fine on Desire (Eclair).
Brilliant work by the developer but why haven't Google dealt with this?
Just purchased the app but can't get it to work on my EVO... I've made sure it is checked under searchable items on my home page settings but it is still not working. I am using Android Version 2.2. I've tried searching for company names that I know I have multiple contacts for but it only pulls up one contact for each. I've tried searching "Env" and "Environmental" which should pull up hundreds of my contacts as most of the company names have either the abbreviaion or full word but no luck, it only pulls up two contacts. Any suggestions?
Android 2.2 changes things a bit.
In your Quick Search Box click on the icon on the left of it and from the drop down select Contact Search+. You will be able to search all your Env contacts from there.
Better yet, long click on desktop and select Add Widgets and add Search Box widget. It will then ask you what type of search box to add. Select Contact Search+. You will have dedicated Contact Search+ search box.
